Dear [NAME]
Segway into the New Year

Tradition encourages us to look towards the New Year as a new beginning and to set time aside to think about New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions focus our thinking on what we would like to change. This is a good starting point. However, I would encourage you to focus on what you want to accomplish during this year. When we do this, it draws our thoughts towards visualizing outcomes. Rather than a resolution to stop smoking or to lose weight, we focus on the joy of feeling healthy and having energy. – The positive outcome.
By concentrating on this positive outcome, we can Segway our way into the New Year.
Last year I didn’t know what a Segway was. Today I wish you the delight of Segwaying into 2008.
This photo of us touring Paris on Segways with friends, gives you an idea of what a Segway looks like. It was a great way to discover the city since you roll on the sidewalks. We did, of course, begin with an intensive lesson on how to operate it. To drive it, you simply lean forward to go forward, lean back to go backward, and you turn by leaning the handlebar left or right. If you do nothing it stops. The good news is that it’s impossible to tip over when you are on it; it stays upright at all times. The Segway has only two wheels, but it is self-balancing due to a special electronic system with computers and motors in its base.
Segway into the New Year, at least in a figurative sense.
- It’s fun. Let’s start the new year with joy and laughter. Fun and laughter bring positive energy, a great way to set our attitude for living these next 12 months.
- It’s challenging to learn to operate a Segway so you feel confident among the locals and tourists with whom you share the sidewalk. Move into the path of this new year ready to accept the challenges that it brings, knowing that you can master them.
We never are sure what tomorrow will bring, but if we treat it as an adventure and greet it with enthusiasm we will enjoy it more. Jump onto your virtual Segway to greet the unknown of 2008.
- Just as the Segway has its own built-in system that keeps us in an upright position to move forward, so we each have our own level of confidence and AgeEsteem to spark us further. This self-esteem combined with AgeEsteem makes it possible for us to not only affront the unknown, but also to embrace it. By embracing what comes our way and befriending it, we are able to look forward using the new experience and knowledge it brings.
This doesn’t mean that there are not bumps as we embrace the future. There are. Even once we conquer the Segway we still hit bumps and bounce over ruts. But we continue to move forward towards our goal. The bumps are simply there to add to the challenge of the moment and to add interest.
- I love the illustration of needing to lean the Segway handbar left or right, because we never actually go straight towards our goals. There are many occasions when we are bounced off our course due to detours and barriers. It is for us to decide which direction to take and how to lean in order to avoid or circumvent an obstacle or face a new challenge head on.
- No matter how we attack the path towards our goal, whether we reach it or not is dependent on us. We have our own self balancing mechanism which is our AgeEsteem, our attitude and confidence in knowing that we can.
My wish to you is that you Segway into the New Year with the enthusiasm and confidence of AgeEsteem. Dream, stretch and delight in what lies ahead. Race over the ruts and lean around the obstacles knowing that you can do it.
Happy AgeEsteem,
Bonnie
