Practice Bonnie’s Knack

April 20th, 2012 No comments

If one would follow Bonnie’s ways,

Around the world and back,

We’d learn that what she does and says

Is always right on track!

There’s no reason to begrudge the days

And feel our luster lack.

We must see through each hostile haze

And practice Bonnie’s knack!

The Tomato

April 16th, 2012 No comments

Have you ever smelled a tomato on the vine? It is such a delectable scent, so earthy-beautiful.

Tomatoes are varied in color, size and shape. There are small tomatoes, very large tomatoes, oblong tomatoes, and round tomatoes.  They are often sold now on the vine.  There are green tomatoes, yellow tomatoes and, of course, red tomatoes.

What do they all have in common?  They are a miracle for your health.  Antioxidants which play a leading role in maintaining good heart health are abundant in tomatoes.

They also contain lycopene, a substance thought to be effective in cancer prevention.

So versatile in their culinary capacity, they are a must in Italian cuisine with the delicious tomato sauce so often used in Italy.  Served with slices of mozzarella cheese and basil, they make a wonderful and healthy summer salad.  Remember to use olive oil.  In addition to the usual cocktail fare, cherry tomatoes make a wonderful addition to hors-d’oeuvre while bringing health benefits to the body.

Enjoy!!

Sweet Potatoes For Healthy Aging

April 9th, 2012 No comments

The sweet potato, this wonderful elongated orange vegetable, is such a treat to eat.  It is not necessary, as the custom dictates, to add even more sweet ingredients like marshmallows, maple syrup and brown sugar.

Sweet potatoes are a powerhouse of healthy eating just consumed on their own.  The orange color, of course, indicates that the sweet potato is full of beta-carotene.  This nutrient with its antioxidant properties is converted into vitamin A, so important in linking it to a lower risk of cancer, especially lung cancer.

Cardio-vascular disease is also improved when eating this food. The sweet potato is also beneficial for the eyes, helping to improve eye disease such as macular degeneration because of the lutin that it contains.  In addition, it is loaded with cholesterol-lowering fiber and has a lot of potassium as well, so necessary in lowering blood pressure.

Sweet potatoes are only distantly related to the white potato but they are just as easy to prepare and bring so much more to the body.

Add sweet potatoes around a roast to add taste and nutrition to your meal.  Use your imagination and prepare them in the same way as you would white potatoes. – Remembering that the health benefits are much greater.

What Is Age Esteem? – Interview

April 7th, 2012 No comments

Tracey Trottenberg, 41, Los Angeles, CA (from Montreal, Canada)

What comes to mind when I hear the term Age Esteem is feeling good about who you are at whatever age you age.  Esteem for me is feeling proud, and a sense of being in your body and in your essence and just feeling good about you and who you are at whatever age, stage you are now in your life.

My concerns about aging I would say are related to health. I am healthy and I feel good and I recognize that, especially being from Canada and now living in the US, the whole healthcare situation is a concern.  What is that actually going to look like in quality care and access to it, and from a financial standpoint, a quality standpoint.  That is definitely on my mind not just for me, but for others as well.

I would say also just the cost of living healthy and consciously is a concern.  I exercise and I try to eat well and having access to healthy food and good  nutritian and nourishment is important not just for me but for others.  There is such craziness going on in the food industry  with the high cost of the good stuff.

Tracey’s Tips:  For me aging well is so much about the mind, having a healthy mind and having a sense of wherever you are in the journey. Ever since I was a young kid I’ve had a tremendous amount of appreciation for aging and for the process of wisdom and the life experiences that comes with the lines and the greys and the various phases along the journey.  I was very close to my grandparents.  So for me it is about mind set. It is appreciating the journey and making peace with whatever from the past is still stirring those inner demons.  I would say that’s the biggest thing.  Then to live well wherever you are.  There’s a freedom, there’s a wisdom, there’s a peace with a sense of knowing I’m okay.  We were struggling. We have that inner war with those inner demons.  It doesn’t matter what age we are to have that peace and sense of okayness.  That is key to aging and living well.

Hooray!

Today’s the day when I

Will give the time and trust to try

To cease to dwell upon my age

And feel more like a weather-guage!

Sunny through the hours ahead,

Balmy when I’m off to bed;

Calm and clear and never stormy

Cloudless: that’s the best way for me!

If your nature has redeemed

Then you’re onto Age Esteem!

Spices for Life

April 2nd, 2012 No comments

Spices are treasures.  That is why explorers sailed around the world in search of them, and under very dangerous conditions at times.  They have been used for thousands of years, and at the beginning their value was for taste and medicine.  There is a large choice of spices as well, and many different colors, aromas and tastes.

Recently studies have shown that spices are valuable in other ways as well.  Adding spices to your cuisine reduces the risks that fatty foods bring to the body.   One study showed that spices such as cinnamon, black pepper, paprika and garlic lowered harmful fats in the blood.  Another gift of spices is that they aid in unclogging bronchial tubes or the chest when asthma or bronchitis is present.

Of course, there are recipes with spices such as curry, chili con carne and pasta arrabiata but in actual fact, they can be added to any food to give flavor.  And remember, they bring precious health benefits as well!

What Is Age Esteem? – Interview

March 31st, 2012 No comments

Jolanda van Tol, 46, Netherlands

AgeEsteem means I believe in age.  I am counting the years until I turn 50.  My life is going much better than I was at 35 or even younger.  And if people say you look 39 it’snot a compliment because I know myself now and I am happier now.  I am really looking forward.  That is why my hair is grey and nothing is going to change that, ever.

My concern with becoming older would be my health, my mobility but we will figure it out when it happens.  Also perhaps my independence if I could not do things for myself anymore and have to have others make decisions for me.  Those are the only things.

Jolanda’s Tips:  Age just happens!  Accept yourself.  Just accept yourself the way you are.  It is the way it is!  You don’t need to try to look younger with all the techniques.  You still can have nice breasts, butt and no wrinkles at 47.  I love old women.  You know Simona Signoret?   She was beautiful before she died.  Try to be happy.  Keep yourself healthy.  Just move around.  Not to exercise in a room, but just walk and bike and move!  Don’t lay down.  Don’t take a nap in the afternoon like my mother did from age 35.  No, just go on and go to bed early, but stay up all day.

If Only

March 30th, 2012 No comments

If only I could travel more,

If only I weren’t such a bore!

If only I had curly hair,

If only I have more to wear.

If only I were MUCH younger,

And able to curb my hunger!

IFS make rifts with AMs and AREs

Be HAPPY now – you’ve come so far!

Healthy Salmon

March 26th, 2012 No comments

It seems that often when there is a special occasion or fancy event smoked salmon will be on the menu.  It could be called the caviar of today.

How healthy salmon is! It is a delight for us as we age.  For once, fat is good. (The right kind, that is.) We have been hearing so much about the omega-3 fatty foods, and salmon is one of them.  It is a wonder drug for cardio-vascular health, keeping the heart in tip-top shape, raising good cholesterol and lowering blood pressure.

Being a fatty fish, salmon is helpful in easing inflammation and curing arthritis.  Alzheimer’s is also a disease where the fatty fish may be effective.

Salmon may be eaten in many different ways, smoked, baked, cold, and hot.  Enjoying oily fish once or twice a week is a beneficial way to improve your health.

It is true, however, that on some fish farms dyes are used along with antibiotics to help raise the fish, so wild salmon is the healthiest.

In any event, you cannot go wrong by enjoying salmon – the fatty fish!
